How to Get AI Overview Reporting in GSC
We know Google doesn’t want to give us AI Overview reporting, probably because they haven’t figured out how to effectively monetize it. Wink, but we cracked the code!
We cracked the code on AI Overview Reporting:
We know for sure 2 ways to find metrics on keywords Google is using for AI Overviews
Option 1: SEMRush Position Tracker.
If you’re using the SEMRush position tracker you can easily filter SERP features your keywords are ranking for by the newly added “AI Overview” option.
This allows you to see keywords that Google may show AI Overviews for, we always recommend cross-checking with your phone, incognito, etc. since it’s so new.

Option 2: Google Search Console (for now until they definitely take this away)
Despite Google saying that reporting isn’t available for AI Overviews yet (or maybe ever), we actually found out Google is lying…it’s actually very easy to see what keywords Google is using for AI Overviews:
- Performance -> search results
- Scroll down and select “search appearance”
- Select Product Snippets
- Go back to Queries

Now you can see keywords that Google is using for AI Overviews, you’ll probably notice a spike in clicks and impressions starting on Monday, May 20th, shortly after AI Overviews launched. You’ll notice that pages with no products are now included.
The following websites do not have any products for sale or product snippet structured data, yet all of them spiked on May 20th. We’ve cross-checked every keyword that spiked on the 20th with SEMRush option 1 above and had a 100% match with AI Overview results.

So for now, you can use GSC Product Snippets as a way to see what keywords you’re showing in AI Overviews for.
What is AI Overview on Google? (We had Gemini (Bard) answer this one, you’ll see our commentary added)
AI Overview on Google is a new feature in Google Search that uses artificial intelligence to summarize information at the top of a search results page. It aims to provide users with a quick and informative understanding of a topic before they even need to click on any links. (COOL, COOL, COOL I’m sure that will do really well for their ad revenue)
Here’s a breakdown of how AI Overviews work:
- Identifying When AI Overviews are Helpful: Google’s systems determine when a search query might benefit from an AI Overview. This typically happens for searches where there’s a lot of information available online, and where a concise summary can be particularly helpful.
- Generating the Overview: Using AI, Google analyzes information from various sources, including web pages and Google’s Knowledge Graph. It then creates a short summary that highlights the key points of the topic.
- Sources and Further Exploration: AI Overviews often show links to the sources used to generate the summary. This allows users to explore the topic in more depth if they’d like.
Benefits of AI Overviews:
- Save Time: By providing a quick summary, AI Overviews can help users understand a topic faster without needing to read through multiple websites.
- Improved Comprehension: The AI-generated summary can present complex information in a clear and concise way, making it easier to grasp.
- Discover More Resources: The links included in the AI Overview can guide users to relevant websites for further exploration.
It’s important to note:
- AI Overviews are not a replacement for traditional search results. They are meant to be a starting point for your research.
- The information presented in AI Overviews is based on Google’s analysis of various sources. It’s always a good practice to consult multiple sources for a well-rounded understanding of a topic.
Overall, AI Overviews are a new feature designed to enhance your search experience by providing quick summaries and making information more accessible.
